Super Buu Saga

A shapeshifting nightmare evolves from pure rage into an unstoppable force by absorbing the series' greatest heroes.

The Super Buu Saga represents a terrifying escalation in the Dragon Ball Z narrative, where Majin Buu evolves from a naive, rotund figure into a calculating and sadistic force. Triggered by his expulsion of pure evil to form 'Pure Evil Majin Buu' (dark grey), the fat Buu is subsequently absorbed to create the muscular 'Evil Majin Buu,' known in English media as Super Buu. This transformation marks a shift from childlike mischief to 'pure rage' and heightened intelligence, allowing him to strategize against his opponents. Unlike his predecessors, this form possesses the ability to absorb others to steal their power, leading to a cascade of transformations that challenge the Z-Fighters on every front.

Lore & Background

Super Buu is not merely a stronger version of his previous forms but a distinct entity born when the fat 'Innocent Majin Buu' expels his evil side, creating the tall, frail 'Pure Evil Majin Buu.' When the evil form absorbs the fat one, he becomes the muscular Super Buu. This form retains the rubbery body and regeneration of the original but gains a darker grey coloration in some depictions (though the source notes Pure Evil is the only dark grey variant) and, crucially, superior intelligence described as 'pure rage.' He can detach parts of his body to create clones or use them like lassos. His design features an antenna on his head and pores on his chest, arms, and vertebrae.

In Their Own Story

Super Buu's rampage begins after he absorbs Piccolo to gain intellect, allowing him to plan the absorption of Gotenks and later Gohan. After absorbing Gotenks, his antennae lengthen, and fans refer to this form as 'Buutenks'; he briefly wears Gotenks's vest before the fusion expires. He then absorbs Gohan, donning Gohan's dōgi top and undershirt, a form fans call 'Buuhan.' This version wields immense power until Super Buu is forced back into his original state by the removal of the fat Buu along with the absorbed allies. In this final transformation, known as Kid Buu or 'Pure Majin Buu,' he reverts to a child-like but completely feral and animalistic state, living only to destroy. The saga concludes when Goku uses a Spirit Bomb to defeat Kid Buu, after which the fat Buu lives on Earth as Mr. Buu.

Reader's Guide

To defeat Super Buu, the Z-Fighters must navigate a series of absorptions that strip them of their power. The fight escalates when Super Buu absorbs Piccolo, gaining his intellect and momentarily wearing Gotenks's vest. He then targets Gotenks; upon absorption, his antennae form five full fingers, creating 'Buutenks.' Later, he absorbs Gohan (Buuhan), becoming nearly invincible. Goku and Vegeta eventually fuse via Potara earrings to create Vegito, who dominates the fight but refrains from killing Buu to rescue his allies. When Vegito is separated by internal tactics, Goku returns as a Super Saiyan 3. Realizing force is insufficient, he resorts to the Spirit Bomb, channeling energy from every living being on Earth and across the universe. This final attack purges the evil, reverting him to Kid Buu, who is vanquished by Goku's energy sphere.
