Don't Go to Jail

A 1992 Parker Brothers dice game inspired by Monopoly.

Don't Go to Jail

Don't Go to Jail is a dice game released by Parker Brothers in 1992 for two or more players, drawing inspiration from Monopoly.

The game uses six dice. All of them feature symbols from the Monopoly board—various colors, utilities, or railroad icons. Players score points by rolling matches that form a monopoly set of colors, utilities, or railroads. The number of dice needed to score depends on the property type. If a "Go To Jail" symbol appears, that die is set aside. A player may keep re-rolling unmatched dice until they choose to stop and claim their points, or until all three "Go To Jail" dice land face up, which causes them to lose all points earned that round and pass their turn. Once a die is set aside, it cannot be re-rolled during that turn.

The winner is the first player to reach a point total agreed upon at the start. If a player surpasses that total, the win is not automatic—they must wait for all players to have an equal number of turns, and if anyone tops that score, they become the winner.

An updated version, originally called *Monopoly Express* in the UK and Europe and later released in the U.S. as *Monopoly DICED!*, changes several rules. Points are replaced with "dollars." The "Go," "to," and "jail" dice are replaced with a "Policeman" (Officer Jones) from the Monopoly board. One blank side on a Policeman die is replaced with a green-arrow "GO" logo that automatically earns the player $200 (though this bonus can be lost if three Policemen are rolled). An eleventh "House/Hotel" die is added, which can earn or lose Houses (worth $1,000 each) or Hotels (worth $5,000, but only if a player already has four Houses), and includes a "Get Out Of Jail Free" side that cancels a previously rolled Policeman. This eleventh die cannot be rolled until a player completes a property group.

Lore & Background

Don't Go to Jail is played by rolling six dice to score points by creating monopoly sets of colors, utilities, or railroads from the Monopoly board. All six dice feature Monopoly property icons. Rolling all three 'Go To Jail' dice ends the turn and forfeits points earned that round. Players may re-roll unmatched dice and set aside scoring dice, but set-aside dice cannot be re-rolled.

Reader's Guide

Don't Go to Jail represents a mid-1990s expansion of the Monopoly brand into faster, dice-based gameplay. Its significance lies in being part of a trio of Parker Brothers games—Advance to Boardwalk, Free Parking, and Don't Go to Jail—that capitalized on Monopoly's popularity. The game's mechanics, including risk-reward re-rolling and the 'Go To Jail' penalty, directly echo Monopoly's themes. Its legacy continued with the updated version Monopoly DICED! (originally Monopoly Express), which introduced dollar scoring, a Policeman/Officer Jones icon, a House/Hotel die, and Chance wilds that cannot be moved. Monopoly DICED! also notably used brown for the lowest color group, a first for a U.S.-based Monopoly game, later adopted by the standard Monopoly game and the U.S. Here & Now: World Edition. The game remains a niche but recognized entry in the Monopoly family.
