A demon modeled after Eva who betrayed Mundus to fight alongside Dante.

Trish is a central character in Devil May Cry, an action-adventure series by Capcom, debuting in the first installment released in 2001. Created as a demon taking a female human form to resemble Dante's mother, Eva, she initially seeks to lure the protagonist into a trap set by her creator, Mundus. However, after being crucified by Mundus for failing him, Trish aids Dante in defeating the demon lord, leading to an alliance that defines her future role. Beyond the mainline entries where she serves as a supporting character or playable fighter, she appears in other Capcom titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble.

Lore & Background

Trish's narrative begins with deception; hired by Dante to stop Mundus, she reveals herself as his servant using her resemblance to Eva to lure him to Mallet Island. Despite showing her true agenda, Dante saves her life when Mundus deems her unworthy and crucifies her. Reappearing during the final battle against Mundus, Trish offers her power to help Dante finish the enemy, marking their transition into partners. In Devil May Cry 2, she appears as an unlockable playable character separate from the plot, and in a novel version of that game, she serves as an alternative persona from a parallel world who is eventually killed by Dante after he fails to persuade her against Mundus.

Her story continues in The Animated Series where she works mostly alone before teaming up with Lady and Dante to stop a new demon invasion. In Devil May Cry 4, she disguises herself as Gloria, an executive for the Holy Knights of the Order of Sparda, posing as an enemy to Dante before revealing her true allegiance. Later, in Devil May Cry 5, she is defeated by Urizen alongside Lady and Dante, only to be sealed inside the demon Cavaliere until Dante saves her.

Reader's Guide

Trish was created by Hideki Kamiya with support from other designers at Capcom, named after Beatrice Portinari from the Divine Comedy. Her design posed significant challenges; her long hair caused extensive problems for 3D and motion graphic teams, described by motion designer Tomoya Othsubo as a "nightmare" requiring multiple joints to animate strands correctly. For Devil May Cry 2, designers contrasted her with Lucia, making them appear from different races, while Hiroyuki Nara borrowed elements from Dante's campaign for her gameplay.

In Devil May Cry 4, director Hideaki Itsuno instructed designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa to make Trish "cute," resulting in a design where her hair was tied back to ease animation. This game also introduced Gloria, a sexually explicit alter-ego intended to appeal to casual fans without crossing into vulgarity. In Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, she became a playable character with moves inspired by her previous appearances and the fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Her voice acting has been handled by Sarah Lafleur in the original game and Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, Danielle Burgio in Devil May Cry 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Luci Christian in The Animated Series, while Japanese actor Atsuko Tanaka voiced her in the anime, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition.
