Mundus

The Emperor of the Underworld, betrayed by Sparda and banished by his son.

Mundus is the Emperor of the Underworld and the overarching antagonist of the Devil May Cry series, the main villain of the first game. Millennia ago he led the demons in a long war against humanity until Sparda, the strongest of his knights, betrayed and defeated him, sealing his power and imprisoning him in his own realm. After Sparda's death Mundus took revenge by sending his minions to murder Eva, and in the aftermath of Devil May Cry 3 he captured Vergil and turned him into Nelo Angelo. In the first game he has spent centuries posing as a statue on Mallet Island, corrupting it in his image, and creates the demon Trish in Eva's likeness to lure Dante to his death; Dante defeats him, and with Trish's magic in his guns banishes him back to the demon world, where Mundus vows to return.

Background

In battle Mundus appears as a gigantic living statue of a bearded, winged man with an eye-like core in his chest; his true form is a writhing mass of tissue with three eyes and hundreds of hands, and he often manifests as three glowing orbs. He is sadistic even toward his servants, killing his general Griffon when he begs for aid after failing against Dante. A statue of Mundus can be glimpsed in Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 5 names him as the last being to have eaten the Qliphoth's fruit.
