Soul Reaper

Spirits who maintain the balance of souls between worlds.

Soul Reapers are a fictional race of spirits who govern the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife realm called the Soul Society. They appear in the manga and anime series Bleach, created by Tite Kubo. The series follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a Substitute Soul Reaper who assumes the duties of Rukia Kuchiki to protect souls and fight Hollows.

Characteristics

Soul Reapers are visible only to spiritually aware beings, age much slower than humans, and can be injured or die, though they resist most injuries unless considerable. By learning the sword spirit's name and training, a Soul Reaper can unlock transformations: shikai, a binding contract that changes the zanpakutō's appearance to facilitate special abilities, and bankai, an ability normally seen in captains that requires at least ten years to master and unlocks the zanpakutō's full potential. Many Soul Reapers also use kidō, a form of magic performed by reciting incantations, with spells ranked 1 to 99 by complexity and power; low-level spells can be effective when used by a skilled practitioner like Byakuya Kuchiki.

Soul Reaper court divisions

The Gotei Thirteen is the main military force of the Soul Society, originally formed from its most lethal killers to keep order but later shifting toward a more peaceful role. It is divided into thirteen squads, each represented by a flower whose symbolic meaning matches the squad’s duties or identity. Squad One uses the chrysanthemum, symbolizing immaculate. Squad Two, whose captain also leads the Stealth Force, handles surveillance, covert missions, imprisoning troublesome Soul Reapers, and assassinations; its flower is Pulsatilla cernua, meaning splendor.

Squad Three’s flower is Calendula officinalis, meaning tranquility. Squad Four is the medical and supply unit, with Gentiana scabra standing for fidelity and conscience. Squad Five’s flower is Pieris japonica, meaning sacrifice. Squad Six is seen as a model division for its strict rule-following, using red Camellia japonica to mean righteous reason.

Squad Seven’s Japanese iris represents kindness and vitality. Squad Eight’s Strelitzia signifies getting everything one wants. Squad Nine stays on standby as the security force and also oversees art and culture, with white Papaver somniferum meaning oblivion. Squad Ten’s Narcissus means selfishness.

Squad Eleven, called the Zaraki Corps, focuses on brute force and sword-only combat, often clashing with Squad Four; its Chinese yarrow means battle. Squad Twelve is a scientific research division tied to the Soul Reaper Research and Development Institute, with thistle symbolizing revenge, rigorous, and independence.
