Orihime Inoue

A kind-hearted friend with unique powers who accompanies Ichigo and is depicted as his wife in the epilogue.

Orihime Inoue is a fictional character in the manga series Bleach, created by Tite Kubo. She stands as one of Ichigo Kurosaki's closest friends and develops her own powers following his transformation into a Soul Reaper. Orihime accompanies Ichigo to the Soul Society to rescue Rukia Kuchiki and is explicitly depicted as his wife in the series' epilogue, ten years after the final war. Residing alone in Karakura Town, she relies on support from a distant aunt conditional upon her maintaining good school marks. Known for her kind yet often naive demeanor, she possesses an overactive imagination that leads to implausible fantasies. Her cooking is consistently described as strange or disgusting, serving as a running joke throughout the narrative. She wears her hair long in honor of a promise made by Tatsuki Arisawa.

Lore & Background

Orihime's abilities manifest through Shun Shun Rikka, an ability centered on her ornate hairpins which allow her to reject specific events or states of reality. In the Soul Society arc, she initially wanders with Uryū Ishida before being captured by Makizō Aramaki and freed by Captain Kenpachi Zaraki. During the Arrancar invasion, her power's attack component was destroyed by Yammy, leaving her sidelined until Hachigen Ushōda restored Tsubaki. She is subsequently lured to Hueco Mundo by Ulquiorra Cifer under threat to Ichigo's life.

There, she meets leader Sousuke Aizen, who intends to use her power to restore the Hōgyoku. While imprisoned, she refuses his request and instead attempts to destroy the orb. After being freed by Grimmjow Jeagerjaques to heal him, she witnesses Ulquiorra's death at the hands of a Hollowfied Ichigo. Later, during the Quincy conflict, her memories are altered by Tsukishima before she joins the fight against Yhwach and Quilge Opie.

Reader's Guide

She is voiced by Yuki Matsuoka in Japanese and Stephanie Sheh in English, the latter noting the challenge of balancing her ditzy moments with genuine strength. In live-action media, she is portrayed by Erina Mano in the 2018 film. Her popularity is well-documented; she ranked 5th in the first character poll, dropped to 12th in the second, then rose to 10th and 8th in subsequent polls, surpassing Izuru Kira by 123 votes in the most recent count. Kubo initially found her face difficult to draw but prioritized her development after the second arc, recognizing her as a true female lead. Her character was even featured on a special Shonen Jump cover alongside female leads from other series.
