Zuko's Dual Swords

Zuko's dual swords are central to the narrative of "Zuko Alone," the seventh episode of Book Two and the 27th overall. Aired on May 12, 2006, this is the only series episode not featuring Zach Tyler Eisen as Aang. The weapons appear when a weary Zuko arrives at an Earth Kingdom village, where they become a focal point of interaction with a young boy named Lee. After Zuko takes the blame for Lee throwing an egg at corrupt soldiers, Lee sneaks out to practice with the swords in a field. This moment marks a turning point where Zuko catches the boy and trains him, revealing the weapons' role as tools for mentorship rather than just instruments of war.

Lore & Background

Five years prior to the episode's events, Iroh gifted Zuko an Earth Kingdom knife after breaking through the Outer Wall of Ba Sing Se. In the flashback sequence following Azulon's death and Ozai's ascension as Fire Lord, these blades represent the life Zuko left behind with his mother Ursa. The narrative explicitly states that when Lee's mother seeks help after soldiers take Lee for threatening them with a knife, Zuko departs but later returns to face the soldiers using his swords. After defeating three soldiers, he is knocked unconscious and flashes back to his mother's final words: "never forget who you are." Upon waking, he uses Firebending to defeat the final soldier before proclaiming his lineage, causing Lee and the town to turn against him.

According to the episode's production details, the final fight scene takes place at high noon to emulate a western standoff feeling. Zuko utilizes his dual swords in conjunction with Firebending. After being knocked unconscious by a soldier, Zuko wakes up and uses Firebending to defeat him. Prior to this, he successfully defeated three other soldiers using only his swords. The weapons are also shown to be used for training; Lee is seen practicing with them in a field before Zuko intervenes to instruct him.
