Sokka's journey begins at age fifteen in the Southern Water Tribe, where he lacks bending abilities but compensates with sharp wit and resourcefulness. Initially skeptical and sexist, his character arc is defined by growth, culminating in a sincere apology to the Kyoshi Warriors for his chauvinistic views. His father's absence during childhood instilled a deep sense of responsibility, driving him to prove himself despite being clumsy or mistaken at times. A running gag involves Sokka forgetting that Toph is blind and becoming immersed in viscous substances like raw sewage or cactus juice.
