Fire Sages

Guardians of the Avatar monuments and the Fire Nation's religious authority.

The Fire Sages are an elite group of Fire Nation religious guardians of the Avatar monuments in Avatar: The Last Airbender. They founded the Fire Nation, and their leader was once known as the Fire Lord.

Lore & Background

As the nation became a monarchy, the title of Fire Lord passed to the head of state and the sages turned to serving the Avatar; over the hundred years some came to resent the Avatar's absence and served the royal family again, and they told Fire Lord Ozai when Aang first entered the Avatar State. They lead royal weddings, funerals and coronations and identify each new Avatar born in the Fire Nation. The Great Sage leads them, and the High Sage was responsible for crowning the next Fire Lord.
