Characterization

Lady Shiva is considered nearly peerless in unarmed combat and with a sword, with her prowess typically surpassing Batman. Several fighters are stated to rival her, including Bronze Tiger, Connor Hawke, Black Canary, the Twelve Brothers in Silk, David Cain, Cassandra Cain, and Richard Dragon. She is characterized as a thrill-seeking combatant looking for a challenge, with motivations attributed to a death wish, boredom, or vengeance against David Cain for her sister's death and subsequent sexual assault.

Earlier stories depicted her as witty and sarcastic, joking about feminine frailty before defeating opponents, and she sometimes aided martial artists to build them into future challenges. She is a master of many martial arts disciplines, including Judo, Karate, Kuroshi, Savate, Capoeira, and Kung-Fu, with strength enough to shatter bones and break armor. She is also skilled with samurai and ninja weaponry, expert at reading body language to find weak points, and proficient in deception, medicine, and healing arts, including manipulation of qi for rapid healing.

Fictional character biography

Originally introduced as Sandra Woosan, she is the sister of Carolyn Woosan, love interest of Richard Dragon. Adopting the name Shiva after the Hindu god of destruction, she blamed Dragon for her sister's death and challenged him to a duel. Dragon later revealed that Guano Cravat manipulated her into believing Dragon was responsible. After defeating Cravat, Shiva allied with Dragon and Ben Turner under spymaster Barney Ling of G.O.O.D. until Turner's disappearance.

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, her origin was revised: she was raised in a secretive Chinese village by a cruel woman called Mother, who trained her as a fighter and gave her the Shiva moniker. She later lived in Detroit with her sister Carolyn, practicing martial arts as a duo, though Sandra held back. David Cain, a League of Assassins trainer, noticed her skills and became enamored, believing she could produce a child suited for Ra's al Ghul's bodyguard.

After joining the League, Cain murdered Carolyn; Sandra confronted him but was outsmarted and beaten. He allowed her to live on condition she conceive his child, raping her. Sandra later said she let him live because he showed her Carolyn had held her back, but her desire for revenge drove her to greater martial artistry. She gave birth to Cassandra Cain.
