Background
In the comics his parents were influential Martians, and twins were thought to be one being divided between light and darkness. His mother, a precognitive mystic, foresaw that one son would betray their people and the other become their champion, naming them J'onn J'onzz, meaning light to the light, and Ma'alefa'ak, darkness in the heart. He grew up an outcast, turned to science and sorcery, and after a failed hunt for the Anti-Life Equation had his telepathy removed. He later wiped out the Martians with a psychic curse that J'onn survived.
Like the Martian Manhunter and other Green Martians he has superhuman strength, stamina, speed and durability, Martian vision, and complete control of his molecular structure that allows shapeshifting, regeneration, invisibility and intangibility, plus telekinesis. Because his telepathic abilities were removed he did not share the Martian weakness to fire until J'onn lifted the block.
The Young Justice version feels White Martians are oppressed by the Green and Red Martians, took his codename from a Martian creature to strike terror in them, and in the fourth season allies with Darkseid, who gives him the planet Durla for a White Martian community.
