Background
In his first story Despero rules the planet Kalanor as a tyrant and pursues two rebels to the Justice League. He hypnotises the team, defeats the Flash in a chess-like game and sends the League to another dimension, until Snapper Carr, pretending to be hypnotised, weakens him with the rebels' energy-absorbing weapon.
He later has his third eye surgically removed, losing his hypnotic powers until it grows back, then ages half the League and banishes the rest to worlds where he has made reptiles, insects and sea life intelligent. Wonder Woman exposes him with her Lasso of Truth when he poses as an aged Superman.
He returned in Justice League America and Justice League Europe in 1990 and 1991, his body served as host for L-Ron in Justice League Task Force, and he appeared in spirit form in Young Justice #6 in 1999. IGN ranked him the 96th-greatest comic book villain in 2010.
