Iron Wolf (character)

Mythical wolf from the founding legend of Vilnius.

The Iron Wolf is a mythical figure from a medieval legend concerning the founding of Vilnius, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and modern Lithuania. First recorded in the Lithuanian Chronicles, the story shares similarities with the Capitoline Wolf and may reflect a Lithuanian desire to connect their legendary origins to the Roman Empire. Legend

One night, after hunting an aurochs in a sacred forest near where the Vilnia and Neris rivers meet, Grand Duke Gediminas fell asleep and dreamed of a massive Iron Wolf on a hill, howling with the force of a hundred wolves. When he woke, he asked the pagan priest Lizdeika what the dream meant. Lizdeika explained that the wolf symbolized a castle and a city that Gediminas would build on that spot. This city would become the capital of Lithuania, the home of its rulers, and its fame would spread across the world. Following the gods’ will, Gediminas founded the city and called it Vilnius, after the nearby Vilnia stream.
