Amarok (wolf)

A solitary giant wolf of Inuit legend.

The Amarok, or Amaroq, is a gigantic wolf in Inuit religion that hunts alone and preys on anyone who ventures out alone at night. In Greenlandic Inuit usage, the word Amarok refers exclusively to this legendary wolf, while other Arctic peoples use it for any wolf. The creature appears in folk legends collected by Hinrich Johannes Rink, including tales where it wrestles a boy to strengthen him and where it takes a mourner's soul after he kills its pups.
