History

On April 1, 1971, multiple Mobile residents called the Mobile Press newspaper claiming to have seen a mysterious creature on Davis Avenue and in the Plateau neighborhood. The paper received over 50 calls, and residents were reportedly very frightened. Witnesses described the creature as "pretty and hairy," with the top half being a woman and the bottom a wolf. Mobile police also received calls and investigated but made no official comments. The paper published a story on April 8, including an illustration by an unnamed staff member, and noted that the fear was genuine and that several children were afraid to leave their homes. The article also stated that all calls were secondary reports; no caller had directly seen the creature. Calls continued for about a week, then stopped, and the creature has never been seen since. Speculation has suggested it was a German Shepherd in a wig as an April Fools' Day prank or a long-haired Afghan Hound. Don Comeaux, director of the Mobile Exploreum Science Center, noted in 2023 that Mobile has a long history of urban legends, ghost stories, and legendary creatures.
