The Shaido are one of the twelve Aiel clans, distinguished by their rejection of Rand al'Thor as the Car'a'carn, the prophesied Chief of Chiefs who would unite and rule all the clans. While other Aiel clans accepted Rand's leadership, the Shaido, under the influence of Couladin and later Sevanna, chose a path of defiance. This decision led to a devastating internal schism within Aiel society, transforming the Shaido from a clan of the Aiel Waste into a marauding force that ravaged the Westlands. Their story is one of pride, delusion, and ultimately, catastrophic defeat.

The Shaido clan fractured from the rest of Aiel society after Couladin, a charismatic but deluded leader, rejected Rand al'Thor's claim as the Car'a'carn. Following Couladin's death, Sevanna assumed leadership, driving the Shaido deeper into rebellion. Refusing to accept an outsider as their prophesied leader, the Shaido and their allies followed Couladin across the Dragonwall to conquer the 'treekillers' and wetlanders, reaching Cairhien before Rand's clans arrived to break them.' The Shaido's secession represented one of the most devastating internal schisms in Aiel history, as they severed ties with the other clans and abandoned the traditions of Rhuidean.

The Shaido represent the catastrophic consequences of pride within Aiel culture. Breaking away under Couladin, a false Car'a'carn, and later Sevanna, they rejected Rand al'Thor's authority; Couladin was killed in single combat by Mat Cauthon at Cairhien. Bolstered by many warriors and Wise Ones, they remained a formidable threat and kidnapped Perrin Aybara's wife, Faile Bashere. It was Perrin who allied with the Seanchan, through Banner-General Tylee Khirgan, to defeat them. Perrin's forces laced the Shaido water supply with forkroot to disable their Wise Ones, rescued Faile and captured Sevanna; the defeated Shaido were led by Therava back to the Aiel Waste. Their defeat ended the Shaido threat, a grim reminder that even a powerful clan cannot withstand the weight of its own delusions.
