Membership is often gained through a secret ceremony where the initiate swears an oath on the Dark One's name, effectively selling their soul. While some join out of genuine belief or a desire for power, others are coerced through blackmail or manipulation by existing members who hold compromising information. It is crucial to distinguish human Darkfriends from the Forsaken (Chosen); while the Forsaken serve the Dark One directly as his most powerful lieutenants, they do not take the standard Oath of the Darkfriend and operate on a different plane of existence and power. The organization maintains a strict hierarchy of secrecy; most low-level members do not know the identities of those above them in the chain of command, and communication is conducted through coded messages and hidden signs. Despite their numbers, they remain elusive to the White Tower and other Light-aligned forces, as their greatest weapon is the ability to strike when least expected, often from positions of great trust.

A man in a fine silk coat sat across from a hooded figure, his hand steady despite the tremor in his chest as he signed the parchment with black ink stark against the paper. The Darkfriends serve as the internal enemy within the Wheel of Time saga, representing the pervasive influence of evil that cannot be defeated by swords alone. Their primary goal is to weaken the forces of Light before the Last Battle, known as Tarmon Gai'don, ensuring that when the armies clash, the Shadow will have a decisive advantage. They operate in the shadows, manipulating politics, assassinating key figures, and spreading fear and discord among the nations of the Westlands. For the heroes of the story, identifying and rooting out Darkfriends is a constant struggle that adds layers of paranoia to every alliance; trust becomes a liability when any companion could be sworn to the Shadow. The organization relies on a cell structure where knowledge is compartmentalized, meaning even high-ranking members often cannot name their superiors. This secrecy protects the network but also breeds isolation. Key figures within the faction have risen to positions of immense power, such as Mazrim Taim leading the Black Tower, or the Forsaken who act as high commanders, yet they remain a ghost in the machine until the final confrontation.

• The Black Ajah is a secret society within the White Tower composed entirely of Darkfriend Aes Sedai who work to undermine the organization from within.
• Not all members of the Shadow's armies are Darkfriends; many are Trollocs, Myrddraal, and other creatures of the Shadow who have no free will.
