Darkfriends are humans seduced into serving the Dark One by promises of power and immortality. Padan Fain, the peddler who leads the Trollocs to Emond's Field in The Eye of the World, is a Darkfriend given otherworldly powers by the Forsaken Ba'alzamon so that he can track Rand al'Thor, Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara.

Darkfriends hide at every level of society: the Cairhienin noble Barthanes secretly passes Fain's message luring Rand to Falme in The Great Hunt, Ryne, a friend of Lan Mandragoran, turns out to be a Darkfriend in New Spring, and Ba'alzamon's clandestine meeting in The Great Hunt gathers Darkfriends alongside Forsaken, two Aes Sedai and a Questioner of the Children of the Light.
