Lore & Background
However, when Logain refused to submit to the Aes Sedai's control and fled, he was hunted down by Moiraine and Lan Mandragoran. Upon his capture, it was revealed through a test with the Bowl of the Winds that he was not the Dragon Reborn, but merely another man who had somehow resisted the taint for a time. The White Tower, fearing the chaos of men channeling, stripped him of his ability to weave using the Choedan Kal and imprisoned him in the Black Tower's dungeons. His existence became a dark secret, a living proof that men could survive the Power, which later made him an invaluable teacher when Rand al'Thor eventually freed him from the Bowl.
In Their Own Story
The damp silence of the dungeon was broken only by the scratch of stone against stone. Logain sat in the corner, his hands bound not by rope, but by a terrible void where the Power used to sing. He remembered the fire that had danced on his fingertips, the terror of the village, and the cold eyes of the Aes Sedai who called him a monster before calling him a savior. Now, he was neither; he was just a man in the dark, waiting for a world that would never understand why he didn't go mad like the rest.
Reader's Guide
Logain Ablar originates from Emond's Field in the Two Rivers, a humble place far removed from the grand schemes of kings and queens. His role in the Pattern is that of a catalyst; his survival proves to Rand al'Thor and the world that men can channel without immediate destruction, breaking the centuries-old dogma that all male channelers are doomed. His major relationships include Moiraine Damodred, who hunted him with unwavering determination, viewing him as a threat or a false hope. Later, his bond deepens with Rand al'Thor, the true Dragon Reborn, who frees Logain from the Bowl of the Winds and appoints him as a teacher to the male channelers in the Black Tower. Logain subverts the prophecy of the Dragon by appearing to be it before being proven otherwise. He fulfills no specific ancient verse but serves as a living refutation of the idea that the taint is an instant death sentence for all men, paving the way for the eventual cleansing of saidin.
