The order is divided into seven disciplines, or Ajahs: the Blue Ajah pursues justice and intrigue with extensive spy networks; the Brown Ajah preserves knowledge and history; the Gray Ajah mediates and handles politics; the Green Ajah trains in battle and strategy; the Red Ajah monitors outsiders' use of the One Power and hunts male channelers to 'gentle' them; the White Ajah concerns itself with logic and truth; and the Yellow Ajah specializes in healing. With the exception of the Red Ajah, an Aes Sedai may choose to bond magically with a Warder, a male protector who gains heightened senses, strength, stamina, and resistance to injury. The few men born with the ability to channel ultimately go mad, so the Red Ajah hunt male channelers and 'gentle' them, cutting them off permanently from the One Power.

Origins and Cosmic Framework

The Wheel of Time series, originally envisioned as a trilogy by Robert Jordan before expanding into fourteen volumes, constructs a universe governed by the cyclical nature of time inspired by Eastern philosophies like Buddhism and Hinduism. Within this Third Age, existence is woven by the Wheel of Time itself, which spins the Pattern using human lives as threads. Central to this metaphysical landscape is the One Power, a magical force that rotates the Wheel.

While both men and women can access this power through channeling, only women can do so safely; men who channel are driven insane, because the Dark One was able to taint saidin. This dangerous duality has shaped societal structures for millennia, leading to the rise of matriarchal orders dedicated to managing these forces. The narrative draws heavily on dualistic concepts from Zoroastrianism and Taoist balance, creating a setting where the struggle between light and shadow is not merely political but cosmological.

The series' completion by Brandon Sanderson ensured that this intricate tapestry of myth and magic reached its intended conclusion despite Jordan's passing.

Structure of the Aes Sedai

The Aes Sedai stand as a formidable matriarchal order based in the White Tower at Tar Valon, serving as both protectors and feared rulers across the Westlands. Their society is strictly divided into seven distinct Ajahs, each dedicated to specific disciplines ranging from justice and history to warfare and healing. The Blue Ajah pursues intrigue and justice through vast spy networks, while the Brown Ajah safeguards knowledge. Warriors of the Green Ajah train for battle, whereas the Gray Ajah focuses on mediation.

Perhaps most controversial is the Red Ajah, whose primary duty involves hunting down male channelers to 'gentle' them—permanently severing their connection to the One Power—to prevent the madness that plagues men who channel. Despite their stated goal of serving humanity against the prophesied return of the Dark One, a secret eighth faction known as the Black Ajah operates within their ranks, posing as loyal members while secretly serving evil forces.

Warders and Magical Bonds

A defining aspect of Aes Sedai life is the magical bond they can form with Warders, male protectors. With the exception of the Red Ajah, any Aes Sedai may choose a Warder, creating a link that grants the man heightened senses, immense strength, and resistance to injury. This symbiotic relationship ensures the safety of the sisters while providing the Warder with a purpose beyond mere combat. However, the world outside the White Tower often views these channelers with suspicion or hostility.

The Children of the Light, or Whitecloaks, are a militarized, quasi-religious order that regards anyone who channels the One Power as a servant of the Shadow and seeks to destroy them. Conversely, the Seanchan Empire views female channelers as dangerous assets to be enslaved; they use a ter'angreal called the a'dam to collar them as 'damane,' allowing controlling women known as sul'dam to harness their power. These external threats constantly challenge the Aes Sedai's autonomy and safety.
