Background

Shane Walsh, a police officer and Rick's longtime friend, rescues Rick's family after Rick is shot and leads the group, becoming involved with Lori; jealous of Rick's return and role, he is shot in the neck by Carl. Dale is shown as the group's wisest member; bitten, he goes off to die without telling anyone, is knocked out by the Hunters, who cook and eat his leg, and after his death Andrea shoots him and keeps his fishing hat. Andrea's younger sister Amy is bitten in the opening stages of a zombie attack on the exposed camp and dies, and Jim, who joined after his whole family was killed, is bitten in the same attack and left under a tree on the outskirts of Atlanta.

Before the dead rose, Allen was a shoe salesman gradually falling into debt. When the group tries to settle at Wiltshire Estates, his wife Donna is killed by a zombie and devoured, leaving Allen permanently devastated. Allen is later bitten on the foot by a zombie while helping clear the remaining areas of the prison, and he dies after Rick's violent and botched attempt at amputation. Their twin sons Billy and Ben are unofficially adopted by Dale and Andrea; on the road to D.C. Ben slaughters Billy, convinced he will come back, and Carl sneaks into the van where Ben is locked up and executes him.

Carol, a 24-year-old housewife and Sophia's mother, becomes Tyreese's girlfriend and breaks down after his infidelity, dying in the prison by feeding herself to a walker. Her daughter Sophia, taken in by Glenn and Maggie, becomes the longest-running female character in the series. Glenn delivered pizzas in Atlanta before the events of the comic, which gave him the skills to make supply runs. He planned to live with Maggie at the Hilltop Colony so that Maggie, Sophia and their baby could be safe, but Negan beat him to death with a baseball bat.
