Appearances

Lee Everett was a history professor at the University of Georgia and a native of Macon. After falling ill and discovering his wife with a state senator, he killed the senator in a fit of rage and was convicted of murder. The game begins with Lee being transported to prison by a police officer; the car hits a walker and crashes, and the officer turns into a walker. Lee takes shelter in a suburban home where he finds Clementine, a young girl whose parents left for Savannah before the apocalypse.

They travel together to Hershel Greene's farm, meeting Kenny, his wife Katjaa, and their son Duck. After an accident kills Hershel's son, the group is expelled and forms a small band including Lilly and her father Larry, who learns of Lee's past. The group stays at a motel for months, then encounters the St. John family, who invite them to dinner and are revealed to be cannibals. After escaping, the group takes a station wagon with supplies.

They later flee the motel due to bandits and head to Savannah by train, with Clementine seeking her parents and Kenny seeking a boat. In Savannah, Clementine's walkie-talkie reveals a man who knows of Lee's actions. They meet a doctor named Vernon, who secures a boat but later remarks that Lee is an unfit guardian. Lee is bitten while searching for Clementine, and the group agrees to find her.

Lee may amputate his arm to slow the infection. Vernon steals the boat, Kenny is lost to walkers, and Lee finds the stranger, who claims Lee is too dangerous for Clementine.

Concept and creation

Lee Everett is the player-controlled protagonist of the 2012 video game The Walking Dead, voiced by Dave Fennoy. After receiving an email audition that asked for a very realistic performance, Fennoy was hired. He found Lee complicated because of his criminal past, his dedication to protecting Clementine, and the unusual people he teamed up with during the zombie outbreak. Having a child himself helped Fennoy connect with the bond between Lee and Clementine, which writer Gary Whitta called emotionally authentic.

Telltale CEO Dan Connors compared Lee to Rick Grimes, describing him as tough, smart, and caring, and noted that his personality reflects the player’s decisions. Designer Harrison G. Pink stressed that every line of Lee’s dialogue had to feel believable, as if he were a real person with genuine fears and desires, even when players chose what he said. Lead writer Sean Vanaman explained that the team worked to address racism in Lee’s backstory, crafting events where he faced prejudice that led to his conflict with his wife, and making sure the dialogue reflected his personal experiences rather than stereotypes.

Reception

Lee Everett was acclaimed by critics and fans. IGN's Colin Campbell wrote that Lee matters because he has great qualities such as being nice and modest, describing him as an everyman. Fellow IGN writer Greg Miller cited Lee as a reason he enjoys the game, feeling involved in his development. Polygon included Lee and Clementine among the 70 best video game characters of the 2010s, with Colin Campbell writing that later seasons show Clementine's debt to Lee and the lessons she learned.

Kotaku's Kirk Hamilton stated he was more interested in seeing Lee grow than Rick Grimes. Rock Paper Shotgun's John Walker called Lee an everyman character in zombie fiction. Samuel James Riley of GamesRadar listed Lee and Clementine as one of the best video game duos, calling their story touching and one of the most tragic friendships in gaming. The Daily Telegraph's Emily Richardson cited Lee's mysterious and complex character design as notable.

GamesRadar staff named Lee the 84th-best video game hero, citing his bravery and devotion to Clementine. Dave Fennoy received praise for his portrayal, including from Alan Danzis of the New York Post. Fennoy was nominated for Best Performance by a Human Male at the 2012 Spike TV Video Game Awards and for the Performance category at the 2013 British Academy Video Games Awards. Lee Everett's character won Outstanding Character Performance at the 16th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
