Appearances
Jerry first appeared in the episode "The Well" in the auditorium with King Ezekiel and Shiva. He accompanied Ezekiel and others to gather feral pigs for the Saviors. In "Rock in the Road", Jerry stood beside King Ezekiel as he refused a deal with Rick Grimes regarding rebellion against the Saviors. Before returning home, the group visited Carol, and Jerry gave her a fruit cake.
In "Bury Me Here", the team ventured to deliver twelve melons to the Saviors but encountered obstacles blocking their path. When one melon was missing, Gavin ordered Jared to execute a group member; Jared shot Benjamin in the leg, and Benjamin bled to death. Jerry later helped deliver the missing melon, and it was revealed Richard had caused its disappearance, leading Morgan to kill him. In "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life", Jerry prepared with Carol, Morgan, and King Ezekiel to aid Rick in the war against the Saviors and save Carl, with help from Shiva and the Hilltop, forcing the Saviors to retreat.
In "Mercy", Jerry joined the militia to hear leaders' speeches before attacking the Sanctuary, then went with Ezekiel to assault a Savior outpost. They shot at a lookout, but the Savior survived and escaped by throwing a grenade that created a smokescreen.
Development and reception
Jerry entered the recurring cast in the seventh-season episode "The Well", and Cooper Andrews was promoted to a series regular starting the tenth season. Erik Kain of Forbes praised Andrews's development in the episode "Bounty", calling Jerry wonderful and suggesting a film with Jason Momoa. Brandon Davis of Comicbook noted that Jerry brought humor to the series, which had been unfamiliar with such levity. Nat Berman of TV Overmind described Jerry as a faithful steward who provides comic relief to a terrifying show. Dustin Rowles of Uproxx praised Andrews, recognizing him from his role as Yo-Yo Engberk on Halt and Catch Fire.
