Television series
Stephanie first makes her presence known in the season finale "The Storm" when her voice crackles over a radio, asking if anyone is out there. Later, in "Bonds," Eugene picks up a new signal featuring a woman. He responds, and the two agree not to exchange any identifying details. Their chats continue, but she demands he keep them secret.
By "Morning Star," Eugene is still talking to her, and she finally gives her name as Stephanie. He realizes she must be close by because she saw the same falling satellite he did. Eugene proposes she pick a meeting spot and time, and she promises to check with her group first. Rosita then stumbles upon the radio while Stephanie is trying to reach Eugene.
When Rosita asks who she is, Stephanie goes silent. Eugene returns and fails to get her back on the line. Later, Rosita pushes Eugene not to abandon hope, daring him to kiss her. He cannot do it, which confirms Rosita’s hunch that he truly cares for Stephanie.
Determined, he starts singing to her. When he finishes, Stephanie comes back on the radio, apologizes for cutting off contact, and provides coordinates for a meeting one week away.
Development and reception
Margot Bingham plays Stephanie, a survivor from an undisclosed location who first connects with Eugene by radio during season 10. Her name is first given in the episode "Morning Star." She physically appears in season 11, where she is revealed to be Mercer's younger sister. Another character, Shira, is played by Chelle Ramos; Shira is a Commonwealth resident and spy who also uses the alias Stephanie. In "Acheron: Part II," Stephanie arrives in person, giving Eugene the face-to-face meeting he believed he had lost. One critic described her as resembling a librarian, with a bookish and buttoned-up attractiveness. Another review noted that Stephanie comes across as an inexperienced fighter.
