Television series
When Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko, and Princess first arrive at a paramilitary-guarded compound, they are split up and questioned for hours by two Commonwealth auditors while General Mercer watches. Mercer later interrogates Eugene personally, pressing him for the location of his settlement and his reason for being at the train station. Eugene breaks down and tells the truth. Afterward, the group is reunited in a boxcar, where Mercer informs them their processing is complete and they will be taken to orientation.
Eugene later conspires with Stephanie to secretly use government radios to contact Rosita, but Mercer arrests them as soon as they make contact. In a separate incident, Eugene punches Sebastian Milton after the ungrateful man refuses to thank him for saving his life from walkers. Mercer and Lance arrive, and Mercer takes Eugene into custody at Sebastian’s accusation. Throughout this, Mercer’s disgust for Sebastian’s entitled rudeness is barely concealed.
Development and reception
Michael James Shaw played Michael Mercer, the general of the Commonwealth military and a resident of that community. Shaw was announced as a series regular for the role in March 2021, and Mercer first appeared in the season eleven premiere "Acheron: Part I." The character was taken from the graphic novels. Critics gave him several nicknames based on his look. Cameron Bonomolo called him a brawny badass in red armor and said he wore a pumpkin-colored space suit.
Erik Kain described Mercer as a tough cookie. Ron Hogan nicknamed him the Pumpkin King because of his armor's color. Alex McLevy referred to him as a hulking red stormtrooper, noted he went to West Point, and pointed out that he granted asylum to Eugene and others. Zach Marsh observed that Mercer is an imposing soldier in orange armor who had a standoff with Ezekiel, knows Eugene is a bad liar, and warns him to stay honest.
In a review of "Out of the Ashes," Kain wrote that Princess tries to distract Mercer, which likely makes things worse. McLevy said he would happily watch another hour of Princess flirting with Mercer. Kirsten Acuna noted that in the series finale "Rest in Peace," Mercer is jailed for one episode and quickly broken out, which she called a nice nod to the comics, and that Princess warns him about an explosion so he avoids being crushed by a wall like in the comics.
