The Hope (UDL-002) was the second of the two ships sent to colonize Halcyon. The Groundbreaker arrived on schedule, but the Hope did not arrive for decades, and the colony was told it had been lost with everyone aboard - a story the Board was happy to keep alive.

Background
The Hope left Earth in 2285 under Captain William Hunte, carrying hundreds of thousands of colonists in stasis for a planned ten-year trip, with a crew of 24 awake to run the ship. After nine years its skip drive failed, leaving it unable to travel faster than light, and it finished the journey the slow way. It was found drifting at the edge of the system in 2355, seventy years after it vanished, and the Board left it parked in orbit. The Stranger is one of its passengers. Late in the game both Phineas Welles and the Board want the ship moved: Welles to revive its colonists, the Board to use it for its own plans.
