The Matrix Revolutions

The third installment of the original Matrix trilogy, *The Matrix Revolutions*, hit theaters in 2003. Written and directed by the Wachowskis, it was filmed at the same time as its immediate predecessor, *The Matrix Reloaded*. The cast includes Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The story follows Neo and his companions as they try to bring a permanent end to the conflict between humans and machines, all while dealing with the renegade Agent Smith. Warner Bros. Pictures released the film worldwide on November 5, 2003. It made history as the first live-action movie to debut simultaneously in regular theaters and on IMAX screens. Like the previous film, its narrative was expanded through the video game *Enter the Matrix* and the animated anthology *The Animatrix*. Financially, it earned $427.3 million globally, placing it as the eighth highest-grossing film of 2003. However, this was a drop from the earnings of the earlier films, and critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised the visual effects but took issue with a lack of fresh ideas, weak character development, and the concluding battle. Though *The Matrix Revolutions* closed out the original trilogy, the story continued in the now-defunct online game *The Matrix Online* (2005). A fourth film, *The Matrix Resurrections*, came out in 2021. After being rescued by the crew of the *Mjolnir* in the real world, Neo lies unconscious in the ship’s medical bay. His mind is stuck in a subway station called Mobil Ave, a kind of waiting area between the Matrix and the machine world. There, he meets a group of programs, including a young girl named Sati. Her "father" explains that the Trainman, a program loyal to the Merovingian, controls the station. When Neo tries to board a train with the family, the Trainman refuses and overpowers him. Inside the Matrix, Seraph, Morpheus, and Trinity confront the Merovingian and force him to release Neo’s consciousness back into the simulation. Neo then visits the Oracle, who tells him that Smith intends to destroy both the Matrix and the real world. She describes Smith as Neo’s "opposite," created by the Matrix trying to balance itself, and says that "everything that has a beginning has an end." After Neo leaves, a swarm of Smiths arrives and assimilates the Oracle.
