Killing of Sollozzo and McCluskey
Michael Corleone's killing of Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey.
While Vito recovers, Michael convinces Sonny that their father will never be safe while Sollozzo lives and that he himself can kill Sollozzo and his protector, Captain McCluskey. Michael shoots both men in a Bronx restaurant and is smuggled to Sicily under the protection of Vito's friend Don Tommasino. Their deaths set off a war between the Corleones and the Tattaglia family, with the other New York families backing the Tattaglias.
