Assassination Attempt on Don Vito
The street shooting of Vito Corleone before Christmas.
Shortly before Christmas, after Vito Corleone has refused to back Sollozzo's narcotics business, Sollozzo's hitmen confront Vito as he crosses a street to buy oranges. He runs for his car but is shot five times. His son Fredo, who was with him, drops his gun and cannot return fire as the gunmen escape. Vito survives and recovers in hospital while Sonny takes over as acting head of the family.
