Background

Born and raised in Angland, West escaped a father prone to drunken violence by joining the Union Army. With no natural talent for fencing, he won the Contest through sheer determination, served in Glokta's cavalry regiment in the First Gurkish War, and made his name as the first man through the breach at the siege of Ulrioch. In the First Northern War he travels with a crew of rebel Northmen, who name him Furious after he bites an enemy's nose clean off. Jezal later promotes him to Lord Marshal; he eventually dies of his sickness, remembered as a good man gone too soon.
