Background
Victory in the Contest made Colonel Glokta famous as the greatest swordsman of his generation. In the First Gurkish War, some nine years before the trilogy, he led a heroic but suicidal cavalry charge against the Gurkish at a bridge in Kadir that cost him his whole regiment and ended in his capture. He spent two years in the dungeons under the Emperor's palace before a prisoner exchange returned him to Adua, crippled and shunned by the friends who had once worshipped him. Over the trilogy he rises from Inquisitor to Superior of Dagoska, Superior of Adua and finally Arch Lector, with a seat on the Closed Council. He marries Ardee West, and Savine dan Glokta is his adopted daughter.
