Background
In the Old Time, Juvens took Bayaz as his first apprentice in the High Art, but soon took another, Khalul, and the two quarrelled from the beginning. Juvens sent them to his libraries, Bayaz to the north and Khalul to the south, but their feud only grew. Seeking more power, Bayaz turned to Juvens's brother Kanedias, the Maker, and became the lover of the Maker's daughter Tolomei. Much later he offered to help Harod, ruler of one of Midderland's petty kingdoms, become king of all Midderland; as Harod's most trusted counsellor he saw Harod become the first High King of the Union. He has secretly influenced the Union ever since, under assumed identities and as the hidden owner of the bank Valint & Balk. In The Blade Itself he arrives in Adua and secretly helps Jezal dan Luthar win the Contest.
