Background
Face-blind from birth, he sees people as game pieces and recognises only Fengxian and Maomao by their faces. He met Fengxian when colleagues brought him to the Verdigris House to play Go against her as a joke; she beat him, and their long relationship ended when he was sent away for three years and she, pregnant with Maomao, lost everything. Desperate to be a father to Maomao, he dotes on her to her annoyance. In the first season he presses Jinshi over Maomao, demands blue roses for the spring garden party, and loses a Chinese-chess wager to Maomao that ends with him buying Fengxian out of the Verdigris House. When Maomao is kidnapped he hurls a log into the palace gates, and he urges Jinshi to send the army against the Shi clan, proposing an avalanche to disable their armory. The Emperor appointed him Grand Commandant.
