Background
She told Maomao about the illness afflicting Consort Lihua, her son and Gyokuyou's daughter, which led to Maomao becoming Gyokuyou's lady-in-waiting, and after the garden party she explained how hairpins given as gifts could earn permission to leave the palace. When books began circulating among the servants she resolved to learn to read and write, becoming one of the first students at Jinshi's school. Near the end of her term she worked as a bath attendant to make connections, accidentally caused a block of ice meant for Consort Loulan to break and helped Maomao turn it into ice cream. She left with a letter of recommendation from a low-ranking consort to serve in the household of the consort's sister.
