Basen

Background

Extremely strong - he once defeated four armed men without a weapon and survived being run over by a horse, and Maomao calls him "a bear in human skin" - he is serious, inexperienced and easily frustrated. After breaking his sister Maamei's arm in a tantrum at six, he lived apart from his siblings, avoided women as fragile and learned sword fighting alongside Jinshi. He goes with Maomao to investigate a poisoned minister's kitchen and to decipher a metal craftsman's will, guards Jinshi on Shishou's hunt in the Northern Province, where aphrodisiacs knock him out, and charges into the Shi clan's fortress with Jinshi, bursting into Loulan's hidden room too late to stop her scarring Jinshi's face, for which Gaoshun slaps him.

He spars with his friend Lihaku; at the Western Capital he and Lishu fall in love at first sight; and a duck, Jofu, that imprinted on him in Red Plum Village follows him there.
