Background

The curse was a face powder containing lead; Maomao saved her by writing notes that warned her mother, Consort Gyokuyou, and Consort Lihua of the danger. A cheerful toddler with a mischievous tomboy streak, she has jade-green eyes and reddish-pink hair like her mother's, her hair slightly shaded by the Emperor's. She made her debut at the winter garden party, held by her grandmother, Empress Dowager Anshi, and at her mother's request she sometimes takes lessons in herbal medicine from Maomao. On her first walk outside the Jade Pavilion with Maomao and Hongniang she chased a tiny kitten, which became her playmate with her father's approval and was named Maomao after what Lingli called it. Gyokuyou calls her Xiaoling, "little bell", and her younger brother is the Crown Prince.
