Background

Her first son died at three months old, poisoned like her by a lead-based face powder: Maomao's anonymous warning never reached her, and in her grief she blamed Gyokuyou for a 'curse'. One of her ladies-in-waiting secretly kept using the banned powder on her, leaving her bedridden until the Emperor asked Maomao to treat her; Maomao purged the toxin, had a sauna built for steam baths and restored her health within two months. Later her cousin and head lady-in-waiting Shin, resentful at being passed over as a consort, was found stockpiling scented oils that could be made into an abortion-inducing drug; Lihua slapped her and banned her from the pavilion.
