Background

Gi-hun lives with his elderly mother in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul, and is estranged from his daughter. The Recruiter draws him in with a game of ddakji. In the games he allies with Ali Abdul, Cho Sang-woo, Kang Sae-byeok and Oh Il-nam and makes enemies of Jang Deok-su. He wins after Sang-woo stabs himself in the final, but finds that his mother has died, and a year later learns that Il-nam created the games. Instead of flying to see his daughter, he turns back to hunt the organisers, re-enters the games in season 2 and leads a failed rebellion. In season 3 he refuses the Front Man's offer to kill the other finalists and throws himself off the platform so that Kim Jun-hee's baby wins. Hwang Dong-hyuk drew on his own life for the character, and he and Sang-woo were meant as two sides of the creator. Lee won the Screen Actors Guild Award for the role.
