Background
Players may move while the doll calls 'green light' with her back turned and must freeze when she turns to scan them on 'red light'. Anyone she catches moving, and anyone who has not crossed the finish line when time runs out, is shot by snipers hidden in the walls. The field is painted with a blue sky and village houses. In the first season the players do not know the stakes until the first shots, and half of them are killed as panic breaks out; Ali Abdul stops Gi-hun from falling, and Cho Sang-woo explains that the doll is a motion sensor. The game is based on the Korean children's game of the same kind, in which the caller chants about the mugunghwa flower blooming.
