Background

The six games are Red Light, Green Light; ppopgi, cutting a shape out of a dalgona sugar wafer; tug of war between teams of ten on raised platforms; marbles against a partner; a glass bridge of tempered and ordinary panels; and the final squid game. After the first game the players vote to leave, but most return when they cannot escape their debts. Detective Hwang Jun-ho follows Gi-hun, infiltrates the island disguised as a guard and finds that his missing brother In-ho won the 2015 games; the Front Man turns out to be In-ho. Foreign VIPs arrive to bet on the late games. Gi-hun wins after Cho Sang-woo stabs himself in the final, and a year later learns that Player 001, Oh Il-nam, created the games. Hwang first wrote the story as a film and expanded it into a series after Netflix ordered it in 2019; Netflix first wanted to call it Round Six.
