Ophiomastix venosa is a brittle star that lives in the shallow coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific, where it is often found among coral and rock formations. German zoologist Wilhelm Peters first described this species in 1851. Its most distinctive feature is the set of club-shaped spines running along each of its arms, a trait unique to this species.
This brittle star belongs to the class Ophiuroidea within the phylum Echinodermata. Adults feed mainly on *Sargassum densifolium*, an algae native to their habitat. Since Peters’ initial description, very few studies have been published, so its conservation status remains poorly understood. Sightings are limited to coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific and have not been recorded elsewhere.
O. venosa has the typical brittle star body plan: pentaradial symmetry with five serpent-like arms attached to a central disk. Its arms are covered in spines used for movement, feeding, and defense. The species is recognized by its enlarged upper arm spines, which are covered by a thickened epithelium, and by the absence—or extreme smallness—of scales on its central disk. The club-shaped spines do not line up with the spines on the opposite side; instead, they follow a 2/3 alternating pattern. These spines are also furcated, meaning they have split projections at their tips.
Coloration ranges through yellows, grays, and browns, with dark and white markings on the disk and arms. The smooth central disk is yellow, with patterned dark lines outlined in white that extend irregularly from the radial shields. The arms match the disk in color, with dark lines running centrally along their length and darker yellow bands circling the dorsal plates.
The central disk lacks granules; if spinules are present, they are widely spaced. O. venosa is the largest ophiocomoid on the Aldabra coral atoll off southeastern Africa, based on disk diameter and the ratio of arm length to disk diameter. Its central disk is larger than that of related species. The maximum recorded disk diameter on Aldabra is 41 mm, and individuals commonly reach over 20 mm. Arm length varies, but the typical ratio of arm length to disk diameter is 5.5:1. The dental plates make up about 20% of the disk’s diameter, and the oral shields are heart-shaped, with length roughly equal to width. The dental plate’s length-to-breadth ratio is 2.8:1.
