Until 2018, Porolithon was classified in the family Corallinaceae, but it was then moved to the new family Porolithaceae. The genus now contains 24 accepted species, though genomic studies have recently suggested additional ones. The type species, Porolithon onkodes, was first described in 1897 as Lithothamnion onkodes by Franz Heydrich, and was moved to Porolithon in 1909.
