Cyanidiophyceae contain a single plastid, one to three mitochondria, a nucleus, a vacuole, and floridean starch, but lack pyrenoids. Their main photosynthetic pigment is C-phycocyanin. Most are photoautotrophic, though heterotrophic and mixotrophic growth also occurs. Reproduction is primarily asexual by binary fission or endospores, except for Galdieria partita, which can reproduce sexually. The group split off from other red algae more than a billion years ago.
