The yellow boxfish (Ostracion cubicum) is a marine ray-finned fish in the boxfish family Ostraciidae. It is recognized for its cube-shaped body, vivid yellow coloring with black spots, and the release of a poisonous slime when it feels threatened. This fish lives on reefs across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as the southeastern Atlantic; since 2011, it has occasionally turned up in the Mediterranean’s Levantine waters, probably after passing through the Suez Canal. It is also sold in the aquarium trade.

Carl Linnaeus first formally described the yellow boxfish in 1758, in the 10th edition of *Systema Naturae*, listing India as the type locality. Early on, there was confusion over its classification because Linnaeus used both *O. cubicum* and *O. tuberculatum* for it. Without thorough descriptions, it was unclear whether these names referred to different species. Albert Günther resolved this by deciding they were the same fish—since telling them apart was too difficult—and kept *O. cubicum* as the valid name, making *O. tuberculatum* a synonym. This species is the type species for the genus *Ostracion*, which, according to the 5th edition of *Fishes of the World*, belongs to the family Ostraciidae in the suborder Ostracioidea within the order Tetraodontiformes. The family also includes cowfishes and trunkfishes, all known for their boxy bodies.

The genus name *Ostracion* means “little box,” a nod to the fish’s shape, while the species name *cubicum* means “cubic,” also referencing its box-like form.

This fish can grow up to 45 centimeters long. Its body is encased in a rigid, armored shell called a carapace, which covers the head and body and has openings for the mouth, nostrils, gill slit, anus, tail base, and fins. Scientists once thought this rigid shape helped stabilize the fish in turbulent water by directing flow over the body, but later research showed the carapace actually increases drag and destabilizes it. Instead, the tail fin acts as a rudder for stability. Despite its stiff covering, the yellow boxfish is a strong, swift swimmer that can cruise steadily for long periods and weave through complex reefs. It doesn’t swim with burst-and-scull movements like an oar; instead, it uses a mix of its dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins. The dorsal and anal fins move stiffly, either together or separately, and provide maximum speed.
