The yellow boxfish (*Ostracion cubicum*) is a marine ray-finned fish in the Ostraciidae family, known for its cube-shaped body, bright yellow skin with black spots, and ability to release a poisonous slime when threatened. It lives on reefs across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as the southeastern Atlantic; since 2011, it has also been spotted occasionally in the Mediterranean’s Levantine waters, likely arriving through the Suez Canal. This species is the type species of the genus *Ostracion*, which the 5th edition of *Fishes of the World* places in the family Ostraciidae, suborder Ostracioidea, order Tetraodontiformes. The family also includes cowfishes and trunkfishes, all known for their boxy shapes.

**Description** The yellow boxfish grows up to 45 centimeters (18 inches) long.
