The longhorn cowfish, also called the horned boxfish, is a marine ray-finned fish in the boxfish family Ostraciidae. Its most obvious feature is the pair of long, forward-pointing horns on its head, much like a cow or bull. It lives in the Indo-Pacific region and can reach 50 cm (20 in) in length.

Adults are reef fish, usually solitary and territorial, found over sand or rubble bottoms down to about 50 m (160 ft). They are omnivores, eating benthic algae, microorganisms, foraminiferans, sponges, polychaete worms, mollusks, small crustaceans, and small fish. To find buried prey, they blow jets of water into the sand. By preying on invertebrates that damage coral, they help protect and even promote the growth of coral reefs.

The species was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 as *Ostracion cornutus*, with India given as the type locality. In 1902, David Starr Jordan and Henry Weed Fowler proposed the subgenus *Lactoria* within *Ostracion*, designating *O. cornutus* as the type species. The 5th edition of *Fishes of the World* places this genus in the family Ostraciidae, suborder Ostracioidea, order Tetraodontiformes.

The genus name *Lactoria* means "milkcow," referring to the horn-like spines above the eyes. Fish in this genus are called cowfishes, as are some related species. The specific name *cornutus* means "horned," again pointing to the large spines in front of the eyes.

Its primary habitat includes coral reefs in lagoons, reef flats, estuaries, bays, and protected seaward reefs. Juveniles associate with *Acropora* corals. Depth range is 1–45 m (3 ft 3 in – 147 ft 8 in), possibly up to 100 m (330 ft).

The longhorn cowfish is found from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward through Indonesia to the Marquesas, north to southern Japan, including the Tuamotus, southern Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, south to Australia and Lord Howe Island. It lives in tropical and subtropical waters. Specimens have recently appeared in India, possibly carried there by cyclones or typhoons.

There is no known sexual dimorphism in color: both sexes have a yellow to olive base with white or bluish spots. Pairs court just before or after sunset. Eggs and ichthyoplankton are pelagic. Females are generally larger than males: males range 65–155 mm (average 103 mm), females 83–250 mm (average 121 mm).

The fish lacks a gill cover, replaced by a small slit or hole, and has hexagonal plate-like scales fused into a solid, triangular, box-like carapace. It swims using a unique method called ostraciiform swimming, which makes it look as if it is hovering.

It is omnivorous, feeding on benthic algae, microorganisms, foraminiferans, sponges, polychaete worms, mollusks, small crustaceans, and small fish, and it can blow jets of water into sandy substrate to feed on benthic invertebrates. The species is the most well-known cowfish species in the aquarium trade.

Its defense mechanisms include the ability to exude a deadly toxin called pahutoxin in mucous secretions of its skin when severely stressed, which is toxic to the boxfish and mimics sea cucumber toxins. The horns may have evolved to make it harder for predators to swallow, and the fish can use them to ward off predators by charging. If damaged, the horns can grow back within a few months. The hard armor exoskeleton and toxic secretion provide solid defenses. The fish forms harems with 3–4 females, spawning close to the substrate to hide from egg predators like wrasses and damselfishes. The spawning season lasts from February to early October, and eggs hatch into juvenile larvae that form the box carapace armor. On Pamban Island, local belief held that when the land got separated, cows on the island metamorphosed into these fish and fed on seaweed.
