Development

In July 2011, Naughty Dog's co-president Evan Wells told Game Informer that the studio would "love" to return to the series but was then "focusing" on Uncharted 3. Wells later revealed that the idea of a new game had been explored "fairly extensively" before work began on The Last of Us. Neil Druckmann elaborated that a reboot was planned, and the team spent a long time searching for ideas they could get excited about, but found that "the ideas we were getting passionate about were getting away from what Jak and Daxter was." They later hinted that a "dark, dirty and dangerous" collection was in the works. In October 2011, an online business in South Africa called BT Games listed a Jak and Daxter Collection for January 2012 release, and Justin Richmond reportedly confirmed that date. Sony then announced the collection for PlayStation 3 in February 2012 and for PlayStation Vita in June 2013. The PS3 version runs at 720p with a fixed 60 frames per second, while the Vita version has an unlocked framerate around 30. The PS3's stereoscopic 3D mode runs at 30 frames per second. The collection includes PlayStation Network features such as trophy support.

Reception

The Jak and Daxter Collection received positive reviews from critics, who highlighted the overall graphical transformation and noted that "though some aspects of the games are dated now, the Jak games still stand up as epic adventures." Eurogamer praised "three of the most interesting platformers of the 21st century," stating that while the series may not be as solid a platformer as Sly Cooper or as refined in gunplay as Ratchet & Clank, "in terms of ambition, invention and grandiosity, it remains leagues above its last-gen platforming brethren." They regarded the games as a "fascinating document of the evolution of the action adventure" and concluded that "the Jak represents a shining example of what happens when a capable developer takes a huge risk." Game Informer said "the series was driven by a restless sense of innovation," praising Naughty Dog's work for "creating great characters, finely tuned gameplay, and a unceasing inventiveness," and felt "the Jak games stand up as epic adventures."
