Gameplay

Players control either Zen or Kaede. The main town provides menus for equipping ninja tools such as caltrops, mines, shurikens, potions, and smoke bombs, and for accepting missions from three primary daimyou. As the story progresses, players choose which daimyou to aid, and are encouraged to support only that daimyou, prompting three separate playthroughs. Missions include assassinating a target, protecting a supply crate, freeing captive peasants, or stealing resources. On a mission map, players use stealth, a grapple hook, silent assassinations, and counter attacks. Leveling up allows attribute points to be spent on max health, attack, defense, an extended special attack meter for the Zankoku attack, and a longer grapple hook. Bosses include enemy ninja clan leaders and eventually the daimyou themselves. Items can weaken foes or lure them into silent kills.
