Gameplay

Ultratron is heavily inspired by Robotron 2084 but offers free pixel movement anywhere on the static screen rather than 8-directional movement. The player controls a robot using the left analog stick and aims and shoots with the right stick. Smart bombs can destroy all enemies on screen. The goal is to clear each level while collecting upgrades and fruit for score. Between levels, the player can upgrade the robot with smart bombs, pet helpers, and increased firepower. Every fifth level is an assault level with more aggressive enemies, and every tenth level is a boss. There are four robotic bosses and forty levels total.

Reception

Critics were split on Ultratron, with Metacritic scores landing at 73 out of 100 on Wii U and 74 on Xbox One. Daan Koopman from Nintendo World Report rated it 8 out of 10, calling it worth a play but noting the visuals were too busy and the assault stages overly tough. Joseph Walsh of Nintendo Life gave it a 7, praising its addictive quality and fresh mechanics for an old genre, though he pointed out too few levels and some presentation issues. Mathias Oertel at 4Players scored it 75, highlighting the unique art style, co-op play, and balanced upgrades, but felt the game lacked depth.
