Gameplay
The gameplay resembles that of MMORPGs, though it is not an online game. Players can buy and upgrade weapons, take on quests, and fight in a group with other characters. The protagonist, Kirito, can equip ten types of weapons, including swords, daggers, and axes. Combat involves automatic attacks solo or with one party member, with damage dealt primarily through sword skills that consume SP upon activation. Players can modify their skill palette to customize the flow of battle. Skills are learned by increasing a weapon's proficiency bar and spending skill points obtained. With a chosen party member, players can execute Skill Chains by unleashing sword skills simultaneously; these chains vary in level from simple bursts to multi-hit flurries dealing tens to hundreds of thousands of damage. Players can instruct their party member to switch, use sword skills, or parry incoming attacks. Kirito can select main heroines and other franchise characters to accompany him, or recruit NPCs from made-up guilds after assisting them with leveling up or procuring specific items. The game encourages multiple playthroughs to obtain certain items, unlock events, and complete side quests, though it lacks the extra content of its successor.
