Development
A trademark for the name Sol Trigger was filed in Japan in November 2011, with the game itself officially revealed the following May in Famitsu. It was described as the most expensive and highest-budget project the company had ever undertaken, and it would be their final title released for the PlayStation Portable. The character designer was Shuji Sogabe, known for his work on the Persona 4 comic, while the scenario was written by Kazushige Nojima, who had contributed to Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts. The anime cutscenes were produced by J.C.Staff. The original release date was set for August 30, 2012, but was pushed back to October 4 after retailers requested the delay, citing an overcrowded launch window for that date in Japan. A playable demo became available on the Japanese PlayStation Store in July 2012. To build hype, a browser-based mini-game called Sol Trigger Training School was released, a simple one-on-one fighting game where players clicked the mouse as fast as possible. Winning provided passwords that unlocked bonus content in the main game. Although Sol Trigger was never announced for release outside Japan, some journalists speculated about an English localization. This was based on developer Imageepoch’s history of working with American publishers like Atlus on Luminous Arc and its sequel, Aksys Games on Fate/Extra, and NIS America on Black Rock Shooter: The Game. However, outlets like Kotaku expressed doubt, noting that the PlayStation Portable was no longer an active platform in North America or Europe by 2012. Siliconera saw a possible sign of hope in the fact that Imageepoch had registered the game’s trademark in both Japanese and English. As of 2018, no version of Sol Trigger has been released in any region outside Japan.
